  • Estimate of the gust speed threshold beyond which a tree or a homogeneous stand is damaged. A distinction is generally made between a critical speed leading to stem breakage and one leading to uprooting (windthrow); the probability that the lower speed will occur allows the risk to be quantified. The speed estimate results from calculating the mechanical balance between the action of the wind and the resistance of the trunk, or the anchorage of the tree. (en)

On distingue en général une vitesse critique conduisant à la casse (volis) et au déracinement (chablis), la probabilité que la vitesse la plus faible advienne permet de quantifier le risque.
